The anonymous SIM card, replaced by something better
The classic anonymous SIM, bought for cash at a corner shop, has largely disappeared. Registration laws swept across Europe, Asia and the Gulf through the last decade. What survives is a data eSIM sold internationally, where no local registration regime applies to you as a roaming user.
Why cash SIMs stopped working
Countries introduced registration to tie numbers to people, usually under counter terrorism or anti fraud legislation. The practical effect for a traveller is a queue, a passport photocopy and sometimes a local address requirement that a visitor simply cannot meet.
Enforcement is uneven, and you will still find a market stall willing to sell you a pre registered SIM under someone else's name. That is worse than useless: the number is attached to a stranger's identity and can be cut off without notice.
How a data eSIM changes the picture
A roaming data profile is issued by an international provider and attaches to local networks as a visitor. There is no local subscriber record to register, no shopfront, and no document. You install it before you arrive and it works when the plane lands.
What you give up
No local phone number and no SMS. For most travellers that is irrelevant, because messaging and calls run over data anyway. If you need an SMS code from a bank, keep your home SIM in the second slot or use an eSIM alongside your physical SIM.
