FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

Including the ones with awkward answers, like what happens when you lose your recovery token.

Privacy

Do you really not ask for ID?

Correct. There is no identity check at any point. You choose a balance, pay, and receive a profile. We do not ask for a name, an address, a passport or a phone number, and we have no way to attach one to your eSIM later.

Do I need an email address?

No. Instead of an account you receive a one-time recovery token. An email address is optional and used only as a backup delivery channel if you want one.

What data do you actually store?

A hash of your recovery token, your remaining balance, and the usage records needed to bill data correctly. We do not store browsing history, message content or a subscriber identity, because we never collect one.

Can you see what I browse?

No. Traffic is encrypted between your device and the sites you visit, exactly as on any other network. Like every mobile operator we handle the routing of that traffic, which is why a VPN is still worth using if you want to hide destinations from the local network.

Payment

Which currencies can I pay with?

Monero, Bitcoin on-chain, Bitcoin over Lightning, USDT on several chains, and ordinary debit or credit cards. Monero gives the strongest privacy because the amounts and parties are hidden by default.

Does paying by card break the anonymity?

Your card issuer sees a charge from our payment processor. It does not see an eSIM, a destination or a phone number, and we never receive your card details. It is still less private than Monero, which is why crypto is the default.

What if I underpay a crypto invoice?

Small shortfalls of up to two percent are accepted and fulfilled automatically, because network fees and exchange rate drift are not your fault. Larger shortfalls are credited to your balance and you can complete the difference.

Are there refunds?

Unused balance can be refunded in crypto to an address you supply, minus network fees, for 30 days after purchase. The $5 setup fee is not refundable once the profile has been issued.

Using the eSIM

Does my balance expire?

Never. There is no monthly fee, no dormancy charge and no expiry date. Credit sits untouched between trips and is still there a year later.

How is data billed?

Per megabyte at the published rate of the country you are connected in, deducted from your USD balance. There is nothing to activate when you land and nothing to cancel when you leave.

Do I get a phone number?

No. MoneroSim is data only, deliberately. A phone number is the single strongest identifier a network can attach to a person, and data plus internet calling covers almost every real use.

Can I use hotspot and tethering?

Yes, on every plan, with no surcharge. Share the connection with a laptop, tablet or travel companion and it is billed at the same per megabyte rate.

What happens if I run out of balance?

Data stops until you top up. Top up from any connection, including hotel wifi, using your recovery token, and service resumes within seconds. Auto refill can keep the balance topped up for you.

I lost my recovery token. Can you help?

Unfortunately not, and that is by design. We store only a hash, so there is nothing that would let us prove an eSIM belongs to you. Keep the token in a password manager.
