eSIM Georgia: a practical guide for U.S. travelers
By The MoneroSIM teamPublished

Heading to Tbilisi, the wine country of Kakheti or the mountains around Kazbegi? You'll want mobile data from the moment you land for maps, ride apps and messages. This eSIM Georgia guide walks U.S. travelers through the real choices: using your U.S. plan abroad, buying a travel eSIM, or getting a local SIM.
Before you compare any eSIM Georgia plan, one quick check: this guide is about the country of Georgia in the Caucasus, not the U.S. state. Make sure any plan you buy lists Georgia as a country, and remember that it isn't in the European Union.
Do you need an eSIM for Georgia?
Not always. An eSIM Georgia plan is convenient, but your U.S. carrier's roaming plan or a local Georgian SIM may suit your trip better.
The right choice depends on how many days you'll be there, how much data you'll use, and whether you need your U.S. number for calls and texts. A long weekend in Tbilisi and a two-week road trip through the mountains call for different answers.
eSIM Georgia and your other options: how U.S. travelers get mobile data
You have three main options.
- Roam on your U.S. plan. Nothing to install and your number keeps working. The trade-off is a daily fee or slow included speeds.
- Use a travel eSIM. You download a data plan before you leave and use it alongside your U.S. line. Most are data only, with no local number.
- Buy a local SIM or eSIM. Georgia's mobile operators include Magti, Silknet and Cellfie. Expect to show your passport when you buy a SIM in a store. Cellfie also says its tourist eSIM packages can be bought remotely, without visiting a store.
Start with your U.S. carrier's roaming terms
Check your own plan first. Some U.S. plans include data abroad, and others charge a daily fee.
- AT&T International Day Pass. $12 a day in more than 210 destinations, charged only on days you use it. A 24-hour period starts the first time you use data, text, or make or answer a call abroad.
- Verizon TravelPass. $12 a day in more than 210 countries and destinations, with 5 GB of high-speed data per session before speeds drop.
- T-Mobile. Many plans include data in more than 215 destinations, with slower speeds once high-speed data runs out.
- Confirm Georgia is on the list. None of these carriers name it on their main travel pages, so check your plan's destination list.
- A quick example. A 10-day trip on a $12-a-day pass used every day costs $120 per line.
Don't rely on a Europe plan
Georgia isn't in the European Union, so it isn't covered by the EU's "Roam Like at Home" rules. Many "Europe" eSIM bundles leave it out too. If you're combining Georgia with a trip through Europe or Turkey, check that the plan lists Georgia by name.
Check your phone first
Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked.
- eSIM support. Apple says iPhone 14 and later models bought in the United States are eSIM-only. On most Android phones you can dial *#06# and look for an EID number. Our compatible devices guide explains this check.
- Unlocked status. A phone locked to your U.S. carrier can't use another provider's eSIM. Ask your carrier about unlocking it before you travel.
- Room for another line. Most recent phones hold more than one eSIM, so you can keep your U.S. line and add a travel line.
How to compare Georgia eSIM plans
Look past the headline price.
- Does it list Georgia the country? Watch for mix-ups with the U.S. state and vague regional labels.
- Which networks? Better plans name the local network they use, such as Magti, Silknet or Cellfie.
- How much data, and for how long? Most plans pair a data amount with a validity period.
- When does the clock start? Some plans start on installation, others on your first connection in Georgia.
- Hotspot, calls and texts? Many travel eSIMs are data only.
- Top-ups and unused data. Check whether you can add data mid-trip and what happens to data you don't use.
How to install and switch lines
Install at home on Wi-Fi, then switch the line on when you land.
- Buy the plan. Use the provider's official app or website.
- Install it on Wi-Fi. Scan the QR code or use the provider's app. On an iPhone, add it under Settings > Cellular.
- Label the line. A name such as "Georgia data" makes it easy to find later.
- Keep it switched off until you arrive, unless your provider says otherwise.
- Turn on the travel line when you land and set it as your cellular data line. Turn on data roaming for it if your provider asks you to.
- Turn off data roaming on your U.S. line if you don't want a daily pass to start.
- Switch back when you're home and turn the travel line off.
Where does MoneroSIM fit?
We don't list a published Georgia rate yet, so check before you buy. MoneroSIM works in more than 200 countries and territories, and destinations without a published rate are billed at the local partner rate shown in your account before you connect.
MoneroSIM is a prepaid, data-only eSIM with no ID check, and it has no phone number for calls or texts. Compare it with your carrier's daily pass for your trip length, and see our rates page for published prices.
Frequently asked questions
Is this about Georgia the country or the U.S. state? The country, in the Caucasus. If you're visiting the U.S. state of Georgia, your U.S. plan works as normal.
Will I get a Georgian phone number? Usually not with a data-only travel eSIM. A local SIM from Magti, Silknet or Cellfie comes with a number.
Will iMessage and FaceTime still work? Apple says that if you use a travel eSIM only for data, FaceTime and iMessage stay on your home number.
What's the emergency number in Georgia? 112, the unified emergency number for police, ambulance and fire, available 24 hours across the country.
Should I buy my eSIM before I leave? Installing at home on Wi-Fi is the easiest route. Check when the plan's validity starts, so you don't use up days before your trip.
The bottom line
If you're still choosing an eSIM Georgia plan, start with your trip length. For a short trip, your U.S. carrier's daily pass may be simplest. For longer stays or heavier data use, a travel eSIM that lists Georgia by name is often more flexible. Whichever you choose, check your phone is unlocked, install on Wi-Fi before you fly, and make sure your U.S. line isn't quietly roaming.
