Turkcell eSIM: a practical guide for U.S. travelers to Turkey

Heading to Istanbul, Cappadocia or the Aegean coast? You'll want data from the moment you land for maps, ride apps, translation and messages. Turkcell is one of Turkey's three mobile operators, alongside Vodafone and Türk Telekom, and a Turkcell eSIM is one of the first options many U.S. travelers look at.

This guide explains what a Turkcell eSIM is, how visitors can get one, the passport and phone registration rules to know about, and the other ways to get data in Turkey, including travel eSIMs that run on Turkcell's own network.

What is a Turkcell eSIM?

A Turkcell eSIM is a Turkcell mobile line downloaded to your phone as a digital profile instead of a plastic SIM card. Turkcell says you can get the QR code at a Turkcell store or through its digital channels, then scan it in your phone's settings to load the profile.

It's a local Turkish line, so it comes with a Turkish number and Turkish rules. That's useful if you need local calls and texts, but it also means identity checks and, for longer stays, phone registration.

How to get a Turkcell eSIM as a visitor

The most reliable route for tourists is a Turkcell store, including the counters at major airports. Expect the following.

  • Bring your passport. Expect the new line to be registered to your passport when you buy it.
  • Check your phone first. Turkcell's eSIM page lists compatible phones and asks you to make sure yours supports eSIM and is online before you scan the QR code.
  • Ask for a tourist package. Turkcell sells prepaid packages for visitors with data, minutes and a fixed validity. Prices change often, so confirm the current package and price at the counter.
  • Scan the QR code before you leave the store, so staff can help if the profile doesn't load.

Know Turkey's phone registration rule

Turkey requires phones bought abroad to be registered by their IMEI number to keep working with a Turkish SIM. The telecoms regulator, BTK, runs the system, and you can find your IMEI by dialing *#06#.

For a normal holiday this rarely matters, because an unregistered foreign phone can be used for a limited period before it's blocked on Turkish networks. Registration is expensive and the fee changes every year, so it only makes sense for long stays. If you're staying for months, ask Turkcell about the current rules before you buy.

Your other options for data in Turkey

A local line isn't the only way to get online. U.S. travelers have three main choices.

  • Roam on your U.S. plan. Nothing to install and your number keeps working. AT&T's International Day Pass and Verizon's TravelPass each cost $12 a day in more than 210 destinations, and many T-Mobile plans include slower data abroad. Check that Turkey is on your plan's list.
  • Buy a travel eSIM before you leave. You install a data plan at home and switch it on when you land. Many run on local networks, including Turkcell, and most are data only.
  • Buy a local SIM or eSIM in Turkey. Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom all sell tourist packages at airports and stores, with a passport check.
  • A quick example. A 10-day trip on a $12-a-day pass used every day costs $120 per line. If you only need data for a few days, a daily pass may be simpler.

Check your phone before you go

Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked.

  • eSIM support. Apple says iPhone 14 and later models bought in the United States are eSIM-only. On most Android phones you can dial *#06# and look for an EID number. Our compatible devices guide explains this check.
  • Unlocked status. A phone locked to your U.S. carrier can't use another provider's eSIM. Ask your carrier about unlocking it before you travel.
  • Room for another line. Most recent phones hold more than one eSIM, so you can keep your U.S. line and add a travel line.

How to install and switch lines

Install on Wi-Fi, label the line, and choose which line handles data.

  • Install on Wi-Fi. Scan the QR code or use the provider's app. On an iPhone, add it under Settings > Cellular.
  • Label the line. A name such as "Turkey data" makes it easy to find later.
  • Set your data line. Make the new line your cellular data line, and turn on data roaming for it if a travel eSIM provider asks you to.
  • Turn off data roaming on your U.S. line if you don't want a daily pass to start.
  • Switch back when you're home and turn the travel line off.

Where does MoneroSIM fit?

MoneroSIM covers Turkey on the Turkcell and Vodafone TR networks at 4G speeds. Original credit costs $2.90 per GB, and retail top-up credit $5.80 per GB, billed per megabyte with no daily fees or expiry. There's a one-time $5 setup fee.

It's a prepaid, data-only eSIM with no ID check, so there's no Turkish number for calls or texts, and because it works on roaming there's no local line to register. See current prices on our rates page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a Turkish eSIM online before I fly? Turkcell's page mentions digital channels for the QR code, but visitors should plan on a store visit with a passport. A travel eSIM can be bought and installed before you leave.

Will I get a Turkish phone number? Yes with a local Turkcell line, usually not with a data-only travel eSIM.

Do I need to register my phone's IMEI? Not for a typical holiday. Registration matters for long stays using a Turkish SIM.

Will iMessage and FaceTime still work? Apple says that if you use a travel eSIM only for data, FaceTime and iMessage stay on your home number.

Should I install before I leave? For a travel eSIM, yes, on Wi-Fi at home. Check when the plan's validity starts.

The bottom line

A Turkcell eSIM makes sense if you need a Turkish number and don't mind a store visit with your passport. For a short trip where you only need data, your carrier's daily pass or a travel eSIM on Turkcell's network is usually simpler. Either way, check your phone is unlocked, install on Wi-Fi, and make sure your U.S. line isn't quietly roaming.
