An eSIM Chile plan gets you online the moment you land in Santiago, without registering a local line in your name. Install it at home, switch it on when you arrive, and pay only for the data you use. This page covers your options, Chile's new SIM registration rules, coverage from the Atacama to Patagonia, and how to set up before you fly.

Do you need an eSIM for Chile?

An eSIM Chile plan is the simplest choice for most trips, but you have three main options.

  • Roam on your U.S. plan. Nothing to install and your number keeps working. AT&T and Verizon daily passes cost $12 a day, so a two-week trip used every day comes to $168 per line.
  • Buy a local prepaid SIM. Entel, Movistar and other operators sell prepaid lines with a Chilean number, but every new line now has to be registered to you first.
  • Use a data eSIM. You install it before you leave, keep your U.S. line for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data.

eSIM Chile or local SIM: the 2026 registration rules

Since August 2026, Chilean operators must keep a record of who holds every prepaid line: name, address and an identity document, either a Chilean cédula or a passport. A new SIM has to be registered before it is activated, and operators can check identity with methods such as fingerprint or facial recognition. Existing lines that miss the check lose the ability to recharge.

Phones bought abroad are a separate matter: anyone staying on a Chilean SIM may also need to register the handset's IMEI through Chile's multibanda process.

A data eSIM that roams on local networks has no local line to register. MoneroSIM asks for no passport, no address and no account: you pay, receive a recovery token, and install the profile by QR code.

Coverage from the Atacama to Patagonia

MoneroSIM connects to Entel and Movistar, with 5G in the cities. Coverage runs the length of the central valley, from Santiago to the coast at Valparaíso, while the Atacama and the far south are patchy between towns. Download offline maps before long drives and treks.

Santiago airport has free Wi-Fi if you need to finish setup on arrival. Hiking, maps and photo uploads usually add up to 5 to 9 GB over two weeks.

Crossing into Argentina

Many Patagonia trips cross between Puerto Natales and El Calafate, or over the Andes to Mendoza. The same MoneroSIM balance keeps working in Argentina at its published rate, with no new eSIM to buy. See Argentina for networks and prices.

  1. Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. Our compatible devices page explains how.
  2. Buy a balance and save your recovery token.
  3. Install the profile on Wi-Fi at home and label it "Chile data".
  4. When you land, turn on the eSIM line, set it for cellular data and turn on data roaming for it.
  5. Turn off data roaming on your U.S. line if you don't want a daily pass to start.

Questions about using data here

Will my phone work in Chile?

Any carrier-unlocked phone with eSIM support works. The profile connects to Entel and Movistar.

Do I need a passport for this eSIM?

No. Local prepaid lines must now be registered with a cédula or passport; MoneroSIM doesn't ask for ID.

Does it work in Torres del Paine and the Atacama?

In towns and along main roads, yes. Expect long gaps in between, so carry offline maps.

Do I have to activate anything on arrival?

No. Install once, turn on data roaming for the line, and it connects when you land. Billing starts only when data flows.

Can I use it for hotspot?

Yes, at the same rate with no surcharge.

Does it work if I cross into Argentina?

Yes. The same balance works there at Argentina's published rate.

What are the emergency numbers in Chile?

131 for an ambulance, 132 for the fire service and 133 for the police.
